BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech softball team swept a pair of games Tuesday with UNC Greensboro at Tech Softball Park, opening with a 13-4 win in six innings before coming back to beat the Spartans 11-3 in five innings. The wins wrap up Tech’s seven-game home stand with a perfect 7-0 mark.

The first game was a wild one as the two teams combined for 17 runs and 19 hits in the contest. Tech got on the board in the first inning, scoring five runs. Kat Banks belted a solo home run, Kristen Froehlich drove in Dani Anderson with a triple and then two more runs scored on an error. The fifth run scored when Bkaye Smith drove in Ashton Ward with a single.

But the Spartans didn’t give up, scoring three runs in the second inning on four hits, but Tech got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning when Betty Rose drove in two with a single to center field to give Tech a 7-3 lead. Froehlich then belted a two-run home run to left-center field, her fifth of the season. Kristina Cruz drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning to make it 10-3, but Tech left the sacks full, failing to end the game in five innings.

In the sixth inning, Anderson ended the game with a three-run home run to deep center field to end the game.

At the plate, Anderson led the way with three hits and three RBI while Froehlich had two hits and three RBI. Also picking up hits were McGarva, Banks, Rose, Laura Wolff and Smith. For Wolff, it was her first collegiate hit. Kenzie Roark (W, 11-5) went the full six innings, allowing three runs on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

The Spartans jumped on Tech starter Ashton Ward in the second game, hitting two hard doubles to score a run in the top of the first inning. The Hokies had chances in both the first and second innings, but couldn’t get the hit when needed and in the third inning, the Spartans chased Ward after scoring two more runs off the senior. While Ward gave up three hits, she pitched well and wasn’t helped by her defense as it committed three errors behind her.

Tech got on the board and chipped into the lead in the third inning when Rose drove in Anderson with a single to left-center field, but the Hokies stranded two more runners and trailed 3-1 after three innings. But they stormed back in the fourth inning to take the lead thanks to five-spot in the stanza. The Hokies loaded the bases on three walks, forcing a pitching change, and then Banks blasted a grand slam down the left field line to give them a 5-3 lead. After Anderson walked and stole second base, she was driven in by Rose’s single to center.

In the fifth inning, Anderson drove in two runs with a bases-loaded, two-out single to right field and then Rose drove in Banks with a single to center field. Marra Hvozdovic then ended the game with a two-RBI single to give Tech the 11-3 run-rule victory.

Banks had a monster second game, going 3-for-4 with a grand slam for four RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Anderson, the other freshman in the starting lineup, also had a big game, picking up two hits, scoring three runs and driving in two runs with a stolen base. Froehlich and Rose each had two hits while Hvozdovic had one.

Ward got a no decision in going 2.1 innings. She allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits while Jasmin Harrell (W, 13-2) picked up the victory in going 2.2 innings. She allowed no runs on a hit with three strikeouts.

For the day, the Hokies scored 24 runs on 20 hits and drew 20 walks, but committed six errors in the field. Anderson went 5-for-7 with five RBI while Banks went 4-for-6 with four RBI

Tech (26-8) will jump back into ACC play this weekend with a three-game series at Florida State. The two squads will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 o’clock and will then play the single game Sunday at noon.
