BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech softball team pulled out a 4-2 win over Boston College Sunday at Tech Softball Park to complete a three-game conference sweep of the Eagles.

In the first inning, the Hokies took advantage of some wildness from BC pitcher Allison Gage, loading the bases on an error and two walks. Betty Rose then drew a bases-loaded walk to plate the first run and Kristina Cruz singled off the third base bag to drive in Kristen Froehlich.

The Eagles struck for two runs in the third inning when Tory Speer lined a double down the line to score two runners after Tech starter Kenzie Roark loaded the bases on two walks and a single.

After flirting with scoring in several innings, it took a two-out, pinch-hit single from Marra Hvozdovic in the fifth inning to make it happen. Rose drew a leadoff walk and pinch runner Sarah Ashby stole second base. Hvozdovic then came through in the clutch, hitting a single off third baseman Lizzy Ploen’s glove and the ball trickled into the outfield, allowing Ashby to scamper home.

The Hokies tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning. Banks led off with a single and stole second base before moving to third on Dani Anderson’s fly out. Froehlich then laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to allow Banks to score.

McGarva, Banks, Anderson, Ward, Cruz, Hvozdovic and Bkaye Smith each had one of the Hokies’ seven hits. Banks scored two runs and stole three bases to spark the offense.

Roark was pulled in the top of the fourth after issuing a walk. The senior went 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Jasmin Harrell (W, 12-2) pitched the final 3.2 innings, allowing no runs on no hits with a walk and a strikeout to pick up her third win of the weekend.

Tech (24-8, 4-2 ACC) will be back in action on Tuesday, hosting UNC Greensboro in a doubleheader starting at 5 o’clock. The Hokies will wear special camouflage uniforms for Military Appreciation Day.
