GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech sophomore Betty Rose and Georgia Tech senior Kristen Adkins have been honored as the Atlantic Coast Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for their outstanding performances last week. Rose drove in nine runs as the Hokies went 4-1 at the Diamond Devil Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. Adkins extended her scoreless streak to 18.1 consecutive innings as the Yellow Jackets went 5-0 on the week.
Rose hit .643 through five games, accumulating nine hits, six runs and nine RBI. She also blasted four round-trippers and recorded a stolen base. The catcher from South Boston, Va., posted at least one hit in all five of her games and had an RBI in four of the five. In the 10-3 win against Florida Gulf Coast Friday, Rose went 4-for-4 at the plate with two home runs and four RBI. The next day against Campbell, she went 1-for-2, including a three-run home run. The Hokies went on to win 5-3. Rose finished the weekend with a .688 on base and 1.500 slugging percentage.
A right-handed pitcher from McKinney, Texas, Adkins went 2-0 on the week and also earned two shutout saves. Georgia Tech finished the week 5-0, which included a 4-0 mark at the GT Springhill Suites Buckhead Classic, extending their winning streak to 10 games. She pitched 12.2 innings, surrendering just four hits and two walks. Adkins picked up a win over Bowling Green Friday, striking out four. Her second victory of the week came Sunday against Belmont, as she fanned seven of the 11 batters she faced. She held opponents to a .093 batting average on the week, averaging 1.39 strikeouts per inning.
ACC softball action continues Tuesday as Georgia Tech hosts Georgia Southern in a doubleheader before heading to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for the Chanticleer Challenge Friday through Sunday. Virginia Tech is one of six teams opening conference play this weekend, traveling to Chapel Hill, N.C., for a three-game series against North Carolina Saturday and Sunday.
