ORLANDO, Fla. – Despite a slow start, the Virginia Tech softball team came back to beat Monmouth 15-5 in five innings Friday afternoon at the UCF Spring Fling Tournament.
Monmouth struck quickly, capitalizing in three Tech errors in the top of the first inning. The Hawks collected just two hits, but drew three walks and scored five runs. The Hokies battled back to score three runs in the bottom of the first inning to get back into the game. A single from Kristen Froehlich plated Richelle McGarva and then both Ashton Ward and Kristina Cruz drew bases-loaded walks, but the Hokies left the bases jammed, failing to get even more.
In the second inning, the Hokies took the lead. Kat Banks scored on a McGarva single and McGarva later scored on Dani Anderson’s single to tie it up. Anderson scored on Froechlich’s single to give Tech the lead, but the Hokies weren’t done as Courtney Liddle scored on a throwing error to make it 7-5.
The Hokies plated four more runs in the third inning to widen their lead. Bkaye Smith singled and stole second base and scored on McGarva’s single and then Froehlich crushed her third home run of the season, a three-run shot to left-center field to make it 11-5.
Pinch runner Sarah Ashby scored on a single from Banks in the fourth inning to make it 12-5 and then Courtney Liddle rocketed a double down the line to clear the bases and give Tech a 15-5 lead.
The Hokies picked up 12 hits in the shortened game, led by three apiece from Froehlich and Anderson. McGarva had two hits while Banks, Liddle, Rose and Smith each had one. Froehlich had six RBI while Liddle had three.
In the circle, Ward got the start, but lasted just 1/3 of an inning. She allowed three runs (two earned) on a hit with two walks. Kenzie Roark (W, 7-1) went the final 4.2 innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Tech (12-3) will be back in action later Friday against the host Knights at approximately 6:30 p.m.
