Liddle claims weekly ACC softball accolade
Sophomore earns conference player of the week nod

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech sophomore Courtney Liddle and North Carolina freshman Lori Spingola have been honored as the Atlantic Coast Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for their outstanding performances last week. Liddle recorded two multi-RBI games, while Spingola surrendered just two earned runs in 27 innings of work. The Hokies won the Coastal Carolina Invitational and the Tar Heels finished 5-1 on the week.

Liddle hit .438 for the week, tallying seven hits, five runs and seven RBI. She also blasted two home runs and stole a base. The catcher/first baseman from Haymarket, Va., hit a home run to account for both scores as the Hokies topped Radford 2-0 Wednesday. Her second round-tripper of the week came Saturday against Rhode Island at the Coastal Carolina Invitational, bringing in three runs as Virginia Tech prevailed 10-2. She went 2-for-3 at the plate, while also successfully stealing a base. Liddle recorded at least one hit in five of her six games and at least one RBI in four.

A right-handed pitcher from Atlanta, Ga., Spingola went 4-0 on the week, pitching 27 innings with three complete games. She started the week with a 7-0 win at UNCW. Spingola gave up just three hits while fanning 14 of the 27 Seahawk batters she faced. She opened the Carolina Classic collecting wins over Georgetown and FIU. In the complete game effort against the Golden Panthers, she gave up just six hits and struck out seven. Spingola wrapped up the weekend tossing the first perfect game of her young collegiate career. She retired six batters as the Tar Heels won 3-1. Spingola finished the week with four shutouts. For her efforts last week, she received NFCA Division I National Player of the Week honors Tuesday.

ACC softball action continues Tuesday with one game on the schedule. North Carolina returns to the field Wednesday for a doubleheader against Charlotte before competing in the 2011 Citrus Classic in Kissimmee, Fla., Friday through Sunday. Virginia Tech travels to Orlando, Fla., for the UCF Spring Fling Tournament, which also begins Friday.
