CONWAY, S.C. - The Virginia Tech softball team fell to host Coastal Carolina, 6-5 in 10 innings Sunday afternoon at the Coastal Carolina Invitational to wrap up play for the weekend. The loss snapped Tech’s seven game winning streak, but the Hokies still finished the weekend 4-1, were crowned champions of the tournament and stand at 11-3 overall.

The Chanticleers jumped out to a big lead early on, scoring three runs in the first inning. Tech committed two errors that didn’t help the cause, but head coach Scot Thomas pulled starter Kenzie Roark after she got just one out.

While the Hokies fell behind in four of the five games they played this weekend, unlike the other three times, they couldn’t come back for the victory. The Chanticleers tacked on two more runs in the third inning on a towering two-run home run by catcher Chelsea Pineda to make it 5-0.

The Hokies loaded the bases in the fourth inning and finally broke through with a run when Marra Hvozdovic induced a bases-loaded walk. But Kristina Cruz grounded into an inning-ending double play to end the threat.

In the fifth inning, Tech plated two more runs to get back into the game. Bkaye Smith led off the inning with a single and eventually scored when Courtney Liddle drew a bases-loaded walk. Richelle McGarva later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-3, but Marra Hvozdovic struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

The Hokies finally tied it up in the sixth inning on a big two-out, two-RBI double by Dani Anderson. Kat Banks reached on an infield single and McGarva reached on an error to extend the inning. Anderson then roped a double just inside the third base bag and it rattled down in the corner, allowing both runs to score.

The game went to extra innings and neither team could plate a run in the first two stanzas. In the 10th, Tech got two runners on, but couldn’t get the big hit and then CCU made the Hokies pay. The Chants loaded the bases and then scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly.

The Hokies had just five hits in the game, with two coming from Anderson. Banks, Liddle and Smith also had a hit in the loss. Roark lasted just 1/3 of an inning, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits with two walks and a strikeout. Jasmin Harrell (L, 3-1) pitched final 9.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Tech (11-3) will finish have the week off before heading to Orlando, Fla., next weekend for the UCF Spring Fling Tournament to start its 11-day Spring Break trip. The Hokies will play five games in Orlando , starting with Monmouth on Friday at 2 o’clock, and five more out in Tempe, Ariz., during that span.
