CONWAY, S.C. - The Virginia Tech softball team took a pair of games Saturday at the Coastal Carolina Invitational, downing Rhode Island 10-2 in five innings before rallying to beat the host Chanticleers, 8-4.

As it did in the first game yesterday, the Hokies fell behind early, as URI plated two runs in the inning on a single up the middle. Tech chopped into the lead when Ashton Ward scored on a wild pitch in the second inning before freshman Dani Anderson drove in Marra Hvozdovic and Kat Banks with a single to right field.

The Hokies widened their lead in the third inning when Kristina Cruz singled with two outs to extend the inning and then Hvozdovic ripped her first home run of the season one batter later to make it 5-2. Courtney Liddle’s three-run home run in the fourth inning highlighted a five-run inning as Tech finished things off early due to the run-ahead rule.

After a slow start, the Tech bats finally heated up as the Hokies finished with 10 hits. Anderson, Hvozdovic and Liddle led the way with two hits each while Kat Banks, Richelle McGarva, Kristen Froehlich and Cruz each had one. The Hokies also tallied seven stolen bases in the game, tying the school game record set against UNC Greensboro in 2006.

Kenzie Roark (W, 6-1) went the full five innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts. The win was the Hokies’ 10th of the year, coming in the 12th game of the season. Last year, it took until the 27th game of the season before Tech reached its 10th win of the season.

In the second game of the day, CCU jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Jazmin Daigle in the first inning but Tech tied it up in the third inning when Cruz launched a solo home run to center field. But as quickly as Tech tied it up, Hokie starter Jasmin Harrell gave it back. A leadoff walk led to a CCU rally as Daigle hit her second home run of the day, a two-run shot to right-center field.

In the top of the fourth inning, Tech rallied to tie it back up. Anderson cranked her first collegiate home run, a solo shot to right-center field. After Liddle walked, pinch runner Sarah Ashby stole second base and moved to third base on a groundout before scoring on Betty Rose’s two-out single to left field. The Hokies finally got to CCU star freshman Ashley Bagwell in the fifth inning, knocking her out of the game. Banks singled and went to third base on Richelle McGarva’s single to the gap. Anderson then came through in the clutch again, singling to left field to drive in both runners. The Hokies tacked on an unearned run thanks to a pair of CCU errors on the same play to extend the lead to 6-3.

Tech added two insurance runs on a wild play in the sixth inning. With runners on second and third base, Banks struck out, but reached on a wild pitch that allowed pinch runner Stephanie Kujawa to score. The flip from the catcher to the pitcher was errant, allowing the other pinch runner, Nina Compton, to scamper home for Tech’s eighth run. Coastal Carolina added a run in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run, but it wasn’t enough as Tech finished things off for the 8-4 win.

Besides the two home runs she gave up early on, Harrell (W, 3-0) was on point the rest of the way. The sophomore allowed four runs on the three hits with four walks and 11 strikeouts, tying her career high.

The Hokies had eight hits in the game, led by Anderson and Rose, who had two apiece. Banks, McGarva, Liddle and Cruz each had one hit.

Tech (11-2) will finish up the weekend with a single game Sunday at noon against Coastal Carolina.
