CONWAY, S.C. - Led by two strong pitching performances, the Virginia Tech softball team won a pair of games Friday at the Coastal Carolina Invitational, beating ACC foe Boston College 3-2 before dispatching of old Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island 5-0 in the second game.
In the opener, Boston College took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI groundout, but Tech responded in the fourth inning. Kat Banks doubled in a run to tie it up and then Betty Rose’s single down the left field line plated two runs to give the Hokies a 3-1 lead. The Eagles battled back with a solo home run in the sixth inning and got the leadoff runner on in the seventh with a double, but couldn’t get her any further as the Hokies held on for the exciting 3-2 win.
Kenzie Roark (W, 5-1) went the distance, allowing two runs on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts. At the plate, Tech had seven hits, led by Ashton Ward and Kat Banks with two apiece. Richelle McGarva, Rose and Bkaye Smith each had one hit for the Hokies.
In the second game, Tech jumped on top of the Rams when sophomore Stephanie Kujawa cranked her first career home run, a solo shot to left-center field. That’s the way it stayed until the seventh inning, when the Hokies plated four runs. Anderson came up with a big single to right field to plate two runs and the Courtney Liddle singled up the middle to plate a run. Tech got one more run on an error to make it 5-0.
Ward (W, 2-1) was in control, scattering just two hits over six innings with a walk. Roark pitched the seventh inning, allowing a walk while picking up a strikeout.
Tech improved to 9-2 with the wins and will be back in action Saturday, taking on Rhode Island at 1 p.m., and then host Coastal Carolina at 5:30 p.m.
