This Week’s Headlines
• The Virginia Tech softball team will take on NRV rival Radford on Wednesday and then heads to the Palmetto State for the second straight weekend to participate in the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
• The Hokies and Highlanders will square off in a single game at Dedmon Center Field at 4 o’clock.
• Tech will open with ACC foe Boston College on Friday in a non-conference battle at noon and will then play Rhode Island at 2 o’clock later that day. On Saturday, the Hokies will take on URI again, this time at 1 p.m., and will then play the host Chanticleers at 5:30 p.m. On Sunday, Tech wraps up with a single game against Coastal Carolina at noon.
• Tech is 20-5 all-time against Boston College and has taken eight of the last nine against the Eagles. Tech is 7-4 against Rhode Island, last playing the Rams in 2000 when both schools were in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Hokies are 7-5 against the Chanticleers, last playing them in 2009.
The Series With Radford
• Tech leads the series against Radford 27-10 after Radford won the lone game played last season, a 9-3 decision at Dedmon Center Field.
• The Hokies took a commanding lead in the series after winning 17 straight from 1998-2004 and have won six of the last eight games played. Tech is 7-3 all-time at Dedmon Center Field against the Highlanders.
About Radford
• Radford is 2-2 on the young season, splitting four games two weekends ago in Georgia. The Highlanders had last weekend off. Radford beat Georgia Southern twice and lost to Mercer twice - a team Tech run-ruled 8-0 in six innings last weekend.
• Lauren Williams leads the way at the plate with a .500 batting average while Taylor Cunningham is hitting .455 and Kristen Shiflett is batting .400. The Highlanders are hitting .278 as a team. In the circle, freshman Stephanie Dameron is 2-1 with a perfect 0.00 ERA in 11.0 innings. She has allowed just three hits and struck out three. Three other pitchers have seen action, led by Chelsea Kelley, who is 0-0 with a 1.00 ERA in 7.0 innings with two strikeouts.

About Boston College
• ACC member Boston College went 1-4 in a tournament hosted by Stetson two weekends ago.
• The Eagles are batting .254 as a team and have four players hitting over .300 - Maria Pandolfo (.385), Alison Kooistra (.357), Brittany Wilkins (.357) and Rene Delagrammaticas (.308). In the circle, four pitchers have seen action. Amanda Horowitz has the lowest ERA at 3.50, posting an 0-1 record in 8.0 innings. Allison Gage is 0-2 with a 4.20 ERA in 10.0 innings pitched and Nicole D’Argento is 1-1 with a 4.74 ERA and 11 strikeouts in a team-high 10.1 innings pitched.
About Coastal Carolina
• Coastal Carolina is 5-4 on the season after winning one of its home tournaments last weekend.
• Brooke Donovan leads the way at the plate with a .310 average while Jessie Winans is hitting .286 with a team-leading nine RBI. Coastal comes into the weekend hitting .228 as a team. In the circle, Ashley Bagwell has been impressive, posting a 4-1 mark with a 1.09 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 32.0 innings pitched.
About Rhode Island
• Rhode Island is 0-5 on the season, being outscored 54-10 in those five contests.
• Brittany Julich leads the way at the plate with a .417 average and Jocelyn Mattison is hitting .308. The Rams are hitting just .205 as a team with two home runs and nine RBI. In the circle, the staff ERA is 11.00 with 21 strikeouts in 28.00 innings pitched. Alison Hartzell has seen the most action, posting an 0-3 record with a 10.50 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 16.2 innings pitched.
