CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Virginia Tech softball team suffered its first loss of the young season Friday morning, falling 2-1 to Ohio University in the first game of the Buccaneer Invitational on the campus of Charleston Southern University.

Tech jumped out quickly, scoring a run in the first inning on a Courtney Liddle single up the middle that drove home Bkaye Smith. But after that, Tech’s offense went dormant. The Bobcats had a great chance to score in the fourth inning, but Smith made a diving play at second base to save a run and keep the score 1-0 in favor of the Hokies.

Ohio finally plated a run in the fifth inning to tie it up. Alexis Zambrana singled and moved to second on a groundout and to third on a throwing error by Tech catcher Betty Rose. She scored on pitcher Emily Wethington’s double to the gap to make it 1-1. A diving play by Kat Banks in center ended another Bobcat threat, saving a run in the sixth inning.

Tech had a great chance in the top of the seventh to win it with a leadoff triple from Banks, but she was stranded there after Kristina Cruz grounded out, Stephanie Kujawa struck out and Ward popped up to end the threat.

The Bobcats won the game in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Lauren Gellerman with the bases loaded.

Tech’s Kenzie Roark (L, 3-1) pitched well, but didn’t get any offensive support. She went 6.1, allowing two runs on eight hits with two walks (one intentional) and seven strikeouts. Wethington stymied the Hokies’ bats, allowing just a run on five hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts (five looking).

Tech had just five hits in the game, one apiece from Ashton Ward, Kristen Froehlich, Banks, Smith and Liddle.

The loss drops the Hokies to 3-1 while the Bobcats improve to 2-4. Tech will be back in action later Friday, taking on the host CSU Buccaneers at 1 o’clock.
