CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Virginia Tech softball team rolled to an 8-1 win over Iona Sunday in the championship game of the 49er Round Robin at the Phillips Softball Complex on the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to complete a 4-0 weekend to open the season.
As they have all weekend, the Hokies got a run early on to take the lead. Ashton Ward reached on an error and moved to third base on another error and eventually scored on Dani Anderson’s single up the middle. Tech tacked on two more runs in the second inning to force a pitching change. Betty Rose led off with a double to the gap and scored on Kristina Cruz’s home run down the left field line. Ward singled and stole second base before advancing on a wild pitch. She scored when Bkaye Smith drove her in with an infield single to make it 3-0.
Tech kept the pressure on with two more runs in the third inning. Rose doubled in pinch runner Sarah Ashby and then Rose scored on Kat Banks’ single to center field to make it 6-0. Courtney Liddle drove in Anderson in the fourth inning with a double to the gap to extend the lead to 7-0.
Tech got its final run in the sixth inning when Smith scored on a passed ball.
Kenzie Roark (W, 3-0) was in control from the beginning, allowing just one run on three hits with nine strikeouts. For her effort this weekend, she was named tournament MVP. She went 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 17.1 innings pitched.
Smith, Anderson, Rose and Banks each had two hits while Ward, Liddle and Cruz each had one in the game.
