BLACKSBURG - North Carolina rode the efforts of two superb pitching outings as it swept Virginia Tech in a softball doubleheader played Saturday at Tech Softball Park. The Tar Heels pounded out 11 hits in winning the first game 8-0 in six innings before holding on for an exciting 1-0 win in the second game.
In the opener, the Tar Heels led just 1-0 heading into the fifth inning, but plated two runs in the fifth and put up a five spot in the sixth to end the game early due to the run-ahead rule. Tech had its chances, putting at least one runner on base every inning, but couldn’t get the clutch hit when it needed it while UNC managed to do the opposite.
Tech had just three hits in the game, a double from Richelle McGarva and Ashton Ward, and a single from Misty Hall. Jasmin Harrell (L, 9-10) went five innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Ward finished things off, pitching the final two innings. She allowed three unearned runs on three hits. For UNC, Danielle Spaulding improved to 18-3 with a three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts.
The second game was a nail-biter to the end, but the Tar Heels got out of a seventh-inning jam to pick up the sweep. UNC pitcher Amber Johnson was in the midst of a no-hitter heading into the seventh inning with a 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI single in the first inning.
But in the seventh, Kristen Froehlich led off with a triple to the gap and Misty Hall was hit by a pitch to give the Tech faithful hope of an improbable comeback. But the Hokies helped out Johnson by swinging at three first-ball offerings to help her out of the huge pickle. Courtney Liddle fouled out to third on the first pitch she saw and then Kristin Graham and Whitney Davis hit weak grounders to shortstop on the first pitches they saw to end the game.
Froehlich had the lone hit of the game and kept the Hokies from being no-hit for the third time in four weekends. Kenzie Roark (L, 6-17) pitched well, allowing just one run on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts, but got no offensive support to back up her strong performance.
With the losses, the Hokies drop to 19-31 overall and 5-12 in the ACC. UNC improves to 38-15, 11-9 in the conference.
The two teams will play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday at 1 o’clock.
