BLACKSBURG - The 19th-ranked Florida State softball team rallied with a big fifth inning to salvage a win in the three-game series as it beat Virginia Tech 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Tech Softball Park.

The Hokies struck for a run in the first inning, but could have had a lot more, which ended up being huge by the end of the game. Bkaye Smith led off the game with an infield single and then Kristen Froehlich and Misty Hall walked to load the bases. Courtney Liddle punch a single just over the third baseman’s reach for a single to plate a run, but FSU starter Terese Gober struck out Ashton Ward and Kristin Graham to end the threat.

The Seminoles had a golden opportunity in the fourth inning, getting a leadoff triple from Shayla Jackson. But the Hokies snuffed out the rally when Jen Lapicki grounded out to Hall at shortstop and then Graham turned and fired home to Liddle, who applied a nifty reverse tag on Jackson on the back side of the plate.

In the fifth inning, FSU loaded up the bases with no one out on a single, a hit by pitch and walk, and scored its first run when Morgan Bullock reached on a fielder’s choice to the pitcher as Kenzie Roark’s throw home was late. Top hitter Carly Wynn made Roark pay for running the count full as she drilled a two-RBI single to right field to make it 3-1.

That would be all Gober (W, 14-5) would need as she went five strong innings a day after two rough outings. Tech beat Gober with two seventh-inning rallies Saturday. Sarah Hamilton pitched the final two innings Sunday for the save.

Roark (L, 6-16) was cruising until that fifth inning when she ran into trouble by loading the bases with two free passes. She went the distance, allowing three runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

At the plate, a day after scoring 13 runs, the Hokies could only muster a run on three hits. Liddle, Smith and McGarva had the hits in the loss. A day after hitting three home runs, Hall was walked twice.

Tech will travel to Farmville on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Longwood University starting at 5 o’clock.
