BLACKSBURG - It was the Misty Hall show Saturday as the Virginia Tech softball team upset No. 19 Florida State twice at Tech Softball Park, using a pair of seventh-inning rallies to win 8-7 and 5-4.
Hall, a senior from Dayton, Va., went 5-for-8 on the day with three home runs, six RBI and an obscene 1.875 slugging percentage to lift the Hokies to two huge victories.
In the opener, the Hokies trailed 7-4 with two outs and no one on in the bottom of the seventh inning before pulling out a wild 8-7 win. Florida State got two runs in the top of the first inning, but Tech struck back for two of its own in the bottom of the first. Bkaye Smith struck out, but reached on a wild pitch and then Hall crushed a two-run shot to tie it up. FSU got a run in the second inning and two more in the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead. In the fifth, Courtney Liddle doubled and scored on a fielding error to cut into the lead.
The ‘Noles plated two more in the fifth to make it 7-3 but in the fifth, Kristen Froehlich drove in Smith with a single to make it 7-4. That’s the way it stayed until the dramatic seventh inning.
Pinch hitter Betty Rose led off with a walk and Stephanie Kujawa ran for her. Smith struck out, and on the play, Kujawa was thrown out trying to steal. With two out and none on, Richelle McGarva singled to keep the Hokies alive. Froehlich walked and then Hall stepped up and hit her second home run of the game, a three-run shot to tie it up and send the crowd into a frenzy. Liddle doubled to right field and then Ashton Ward sent the dugout streaming onto the field with a single up the middle that scored pinch runner Ella Miller to give Tech the improbable 8-7 win.
Hall led the way with two hits - both home runs - and five RBI in the win. Liddle had a pair of hits while Smith, McGarva, Froehlich and Ward each had one. Freshman Jasmin Harrell (W, 8-9) kept the Hokies in the game, picking up the win with a complete game. She allowed seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Looking to build on the momentum of game one, the Hokies came out and struck for a run in the first inning of game two when McGarva ripped a solo home run to center field. FSU countered with a run in the third inning to tie it up, but in the fourth, Smith doubled and was driven in by McGarva’s double. The Seminoles scored two runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. In the fifth inning, controversy ensued as the Hokies took the lead back with two runs. With the bases loaded and two outs, Marra Hvozdovic ripped a shot to the gap to score Kristin Graham and Ward. Hvozdovic tried to stretch the double into a triple but the relay got her at third base, just before Kristina Cruz crossed home ruled the umpire, much to the disapproval of the Tech faithful.
The Seminoles tied it up in the sixth inning, but ran themselves out of an inning as with runners on the corners and two outs with top hitter Carly Wynn at the plate, Morgan Bullock was called out for leaving first base early on an attempted steal. The game was tied going to the bottom of the seventh with Hall leading off.
She wasted little time as she lined the first pitch from Terese Gober just barely over the left-center field fence for a walk-off home run, sending the Hokie bench into a hullabaloo at home plate as they waited to greet their hero. It was her first walk-off home run since hitting one in the 10th inning against Louisville in the 2008 Regionals at Knoxville.
Hall had three more hits in the game, including the game winner, to lead the way. Hvozdovic and McGarva each had two hits and two RBI while Smith, Froehlich, Liddle, Graham and Cruz each had one.
Kenzie Roark (W, 6-15) was stellar for most of the game. The junior allowed four runs on seven hits with five walks and four strikeouts in the circle.
The wins Saturday marked the first wins for the Hokies against ranked teams this year.
The two teams will play the final game of the series on Sunday at noon.
