RADFORD, Va. - The Virginia Tech softball team fell to its New River Valley rival Radford University 9-3 Wednesday night at Dedmon Center Field in front of a large Senior Day crowd for the Highlanders.

Radford got on the board first when Christiansburg native Hope Creasy hit a laser of a home run down the left field line in the fourth inning. Tech senior Misty Hall crushed a solo home run to left-center field for her fifth home run of the season in the fifth inning to tie it up.

The Highlanders responded with four runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth inning to put the game away. In the fifth, with two outs, Radford got a hit and then Tech starter Kenzie Roark walked three straight to give lead back to RU. With the bases loaded, Hope Creasy drove in two more with a single to left field. On the throw home, Sarah Himan ran into Tech catcher Courtney Liddle and took her out to score the second run. With the ball trickling to the backstop due to the collision, a third run came home on the play and Liddle was charged with the tough-luck error on the play due to the obstruction call made by the umpire.

In the sixth inning, Bkaye Smith led off with an infield single and then came around to score from first base when Richelle McGarva doubled to the gap to make it 5-2. In the sixth inning, Jasmin Harrell relieved Roark and the Highlanders jumped on her. After giving up a run and loading up the bases, Himan doubled off the top of the fence to plate two more runs and chase Harrell from the game. Roark came in and gave up a run on a groundout as Radford took a 9-2 lead.

The Hokies kept battling in the seventh as Ashton Ward and Kristina Cruz singled. Kujawa reached when the Highlanders botched a sacrifice bunt attempt to load the bases with no outs. Smith singled to plate Ward but McGarva fouled out to the catcher, Kristen Froehlich popped up to the shortstop and Courtney Liddle popped up to second base to end the game with the bases loaded.

After a slow start, the Hokies’ bats came alive late as they finished with seven hits. Smith led the way with two hits while McGarva, Froehlich, Hall, Ward and Cruz each had one.

Roark (L, 5-15) went 5.2 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Harrell pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing four runs on four hits.

Tech (16-27) will be back in action this weekend, hosting No. 19/16 Florida State in a three-game series at Tech Softball Park. The Hokies and Seminoles will play the doubleheader at noon on Saturday and then will play the single game on Sunday at noon.
