COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A seventh-inning rally by the Virginia Tech softball team fell short as the Hokies dropped the series finale to the University of Maryland 7-3 Sunday afternoon at Taylor Stadium. With the win, Maryland took the three-game series, two games to one.

Tech picked up a pair of hits in the first inning, but couldn’t get a clutch hit to take the early lead. Maryland came up and quickly jumped on Tech starter Kenzie Roark. Roark issued a walk, committed a fielding error, tossed a wild pitch and then gave up a single to make it 2-0. Another single made it 3-0 and Roark was pulled after just four batters and down 3-0. Jasmin Harrell gave up a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 after one stanza.

The Terps tacked on a run in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead. In the seventh inning, Tech’s Misty Hall led off with a solo home run that clanked off the foul poll to put the Hokies on the board. Kristin Graham reached on an error and pinch runner Ella Miller scored from first base on a Kristina Cruz double. Stephanie Kujawa single to the gap to drive in Cruz, but Maryland pitcher Kerry Hickey got out of the jam to end the inning and the game.

Tech had five hits in the game, two from Hall and one apiece from Richelle McGarva, Cruz and Kujawa. For the three-game series, the Hokies had just seven hits off Maryland pitchers with five runs scored, one of which was earned.

Roark (L, 5-14) re-entered the game in the fourth inning and ended up pitching three innings. She allowed six runs (three earned) on six hits with a walk and a strikeout while Harreel pitched three innings, allowing a run on two hits with two walks and a strikeout.

The Hokies will make the short trek across the New River Valley for a single game against Radford Wednesday night at 7 o’clock at Dedmon Center Field.
