COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Virginia Tech softball team split a doubleheader at the University of Maryland Saturday afternoon, dropping the first game 7-0 before holding on for an exciting 2-1 win in the second game.

Not much went right for the Hokies in the first game as the were no-hit by Kerry Hickey. The Maryland junior struck out nine and issued just one walk. The no-hitter was saved by her defense when, in the fifth inning, Tech sophomore Kristen Froehlich laced a hard ground ball through the right side and into the outfield. But the ball was hit so hard that Terp right fielder Niki Lau picked it up and threw out Froehlich at first.

Jasmin Harrell (L, 7-9) struggled, giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits with two walks and a strikeout. Ashton Ward pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits with a walk.

The second game went much better as the Hokies came out swinging against hard-throwing Kendra Knight. In the third inning, Bkaye Smith drew a walk and moved to second when Ward reached on an error. They both moved up on a passed ball and then Courtney Liddle drove in Smith with a sacrifice fly. Misty Hall reached on a fielder’s choice to plate Ward, who slid under the tag at home to make it 2-0.

That would be enough for Kenzie Roark (W, 5-13), who threw a masterful game in the circle. She worked out of several jams and gave the Hokies the lift they needed. She went the distance, allowing one unearned run on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

The Hokies had just two hits in the game, one from Kristin Graham and one from Hall. Knight had 12 strikeouts, but struggled with her control and committed the costly error in the third inning that eventually led to the Hokies’ two runs.

The two teams will play the final game of the series on Sunday at 1 o’clock.
