BOONE, N.C. - The Virginia Tech softball team dropped a tough 7-5 decision to Appalachian State Wednesday night to fall to 15-24 on the season. The Hokies held a 5-2 lead late, but a five-run sixth inning from the Mountaineers propelled them to the victory.

The Mountaineers jumped out to an early lead by scoring two runs on three hits in the first inning. The Hokies scored a run in the second inning when Kristin Graham scored on a wild pitch. In the second inning, Courtney Liddle hit a sacrifice fly to plate Bkaye Smith.

In the fifth inning, the Hokies rallied to take the lead. Liddle singled and pinch runner Stephanie Kujawa moved up on a wild pitch before Kristen Froehlich singled. Misty Hall then stepped up and smacked a three-run home run to left field to make it 5-2.

The Hokies were looking good until the sixth inning when things fell apart. Michelle Lighton led off with a single, but Tech starter Jasmin Harrell got a pair of outs to put Tech in good position. The Mountaineers recorded back-to-back hits and then Hall committed a crucial error to extend the inning on a routine ground ball. Megan Rembielak then singled down the line to drive in two and tie up the game. Junior pitcher Kenzie Roark was brought in, but promptly gave up a two-RBI single to allow the Mountaineers to take the lead back, this time for good. Roark allowed another hit, but finally got out of the inning, but not before ASU scored five runs on six hits.

The Hokies had 12 hits at the plate, but it wasn’t enough as the pitching staff failed to hold the late lead. Smith, Liddle, Froehlich and Graham each had two hits while Richelle McGarva, Hall, Ashton Ward and Kristina Cruz had one apiece.

Harrell (L, 7-8) was cruising until the disastrous sixth inning. The freshman went 5.2 innings, allowing seven runs (three earned) on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Roark picked up the final out of the sixth, but gave up two hits that allowed the last two runs to score.

Tech will head to College Park, Md., this weekend for a three-game ACC series at Maryland. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m., and then will play a single game Sunday at 1 o’clock.
