BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech softball team got back on the winning track with a pair of non-conference victories over East Tennessee State Tuesday evening at Tech Softball Park. The Hokies won the first game 7-4 and then held on to win the second game, 2-1.

In the opener, the Hokies scored a pair of runs in both the first and second inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Richelle McGarva tripled and then scored on a passed ball before Kristen Froehlich belted a solo home run to make it 2-0. In the second inning, Kristina Cruz hit her first home run of the season and then Bkaye Smith scored on McGarva’s double.

In the fourth inning, Tech scored three more runs when Misty Hall nearly hit a grand slam. Instead, it bounced off the top of the fence for a bases-clearing double. The Lady Bucs clawed their way back into it, scoring a run in the sixth and three unearned runs in the seventh, but Tech held on for the 7-4 win.

Ashton Ward (W, 3-0) went the distance, allowing four runs (one earned) on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Hall led the way with two hits and three RBI. McGarva had a pair of hits while Smith, Froehlich, Ward and Cruz each had one hit.

The second game was a nail-biter that came down to the end. Kristin Graham scored on an error in the second inning. The Hokies got an insurance run in the fourth inning and it became a big run. Courtney Liddle tripled down the line and scored on Hall’s single to center. But the Lady Bucs kept fighting and made it a ballgame in the seventh. Katie Henderson reached base and moved to second on a pair of errors on the same play by Tech’s Smith before Sam Lower singled to put runners on the corners. With two out, Mikayla Treadway singled to right field to score Henderson, but Lower got greedy and tried to take third base. Froehlich came up throwing and threw a seed to Cruz, who tagged her out to end the game.

Smith, Cruz and Graham each had a pair of hits to lead the way. McGarva, Liddle, Froehlich, Hall and Ward each had a hit. Tech recorded 11 hits in the game but scored just two runs as 1 runners were stranded on base.

Kenzie Roark (W, 4-13) was on her game, tossing a complete game in the win. She allowed one unearned run on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

Tech will look to continue its winning ways with a single game Wednesday night at Appalachian State.
