ATLANTA, Ga. - Not much went right for the Virginia Tech softball team as it was swept by No. 10/7 Georgia Tech Friday night at Mewborn Field. The Yellow Jackets rolled to a 15-1 victory in the first game and then pulled out a 3-1 win in the night cap.
The second game was a much better effort from the Hokies as they played the Yellow Jackets tough for seven innings. Georgia Tech scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning to take the lead, but in the fifth inning, Misty Hall connected on a solo home run to left-center field to cut the lead in half. Kristen Froehlich walked before her, but pinch runner Sarah Ashby was thrown out on the steal attempt to keep the home run from being a game-tying shot. Georgia Tech pushed a run across in the sixth and the Hokies went down in the seventh with runners on second and third base, ending the game with two strikeouts looking as the Yellow Jackets escaped with the win.
Jasmin Harrell (L, 7-7) pitched well in defeat as she gave the Hokies a chance for the upset. She went the distance, allowing three runs (only one earned) on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Tech had four hits in the game, one apiece from Hall, Froehlich, Courtney Liddle and Richelle McGarva.
The first game got out of hand quickly as the Yellow Jackets jumped all over Tech starter Kenzie Roark. By the time Roark (L, 3-13) was pulled, Georgia Tech had a 7-0 lead. Ashton Ward pitched the final two innings and Tech scored eight runs on her. Roark lasted two innings, giving up seven earned runs on five hits, with two walks and two strikeouts. Ward allowed eight runs (seven earned) on six hits with two walks. The 14 earned runs are the most given up in a single game in program history.
Georgia Tech freshman pitcher Hope Rush no-hit the Hokies, striking out seven. The Hokies scored an unearned run in the fourth inning to keep it from being a shutout.
The two teams will wrap up the series Saturday with a single game at 1 o’clock.
