Tech Softball Park - 216 Box Score

BLACKSBURG – Virginia scored six runs in the first inning and two more in the second inning to cruise to an 8-3 win over the Virginia Tech softball Sunday afternoon in the rain and cold weather at Tech Softball Park.

The Cavaliers wasted little time jumping on Tech starter Kenzie Roark, but the Tech defense didn’t help as it committed three errors. Roark (L, 3-12) was pulled after just 2/3 of an inning after giving up six runs (two earned) on three hits with a walk and a strikeout. Jasmin Harrell pitched the rest of the game, allowing two runs in the second inning on five hits with a walk and a strikeout.

With the Hokies down 8-0 quickly, Tech tried to rally to get back into the game. In the third inning, Kristina Cruz and Bkaye Smith both singled before Richelle McGarva launched a three-run home run to right-center for her second round tripper of the year.

Tech had two hits in the fourth inning to get a rally going, but couldn’t get the big hit when it needed it.

The game moved to the seventh inning in the rain before the umpires called for the tarp. A 36-minute delayed ensued before the teams took the field again. The Cavaliers scored two runs on several walks and wild pitches as the Tech pitcher Ashton Ward couldn’t hold onto the wet ball. The game was finally called and the game reverted back to the last completed inning, so the score ended at 8-3.

The Hokies, already banged up and bruised, lost another starter when Whitney Davis hurt her knee in the game. Doctors examined her and will re-evaluate her this week, but she could miss a significant amount of time. She joins Kelsey Hensel (broken hand), Misty Hall (knee), McGarva (shoulder) and Courtney Liddle (shoulder) on the injury list of players who are either playing through injuries or missing/missed time.

McGarva and Ward had two hits each to lead the way while Smith, Cruz, Whitney Davis and Kristen Froehlich all had one.

The sweep by Virginia marks the first time the Cavs have done that to the Hokies since 1998 – the first year the two played.

The Hokies will have their hands full in rebounding as they will travel to Atlanta for a three-game set at No. 11/8 Georgia Tech (29-5, 5-1 ACC) at Mewborn Field. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. and then close out the series with a single game Saturday, April 3 at 1 p.m.
