BLACKSBURG - Behind two impressive performances from pitcher Melanie Mitchell, the Virginia softball team swept the Hokies Saturday afternoon at Tech Softball Park. The Cavaliers took the first game 5-0 before holding on to win the second game 4-3.
In the first game, a five-run fourth inning by the Cavaliers was all that was needed to take the victory. Tech couldn’t muster any big hits the few times it had runners on in defeat as Mitchell tossed a five-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts.
Tech got just five hits in the game, two apiece from Bkaye Smith and Whitney Davis, and one from Richelle McGarva. Kenzie Roark (L, 3-11) was pitching well until the fourth inning when she ran into trouble and had to be pulled from the game. She went 3.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Ashton Ward finished the game, tossing 3.1 inning of shutout ball. She allowed three hits and a walk while striking out one.
The second game didn’t start much better as Tech starter Jasmin Harrell gave up four runs on six hits before being replaced by Roark. Roark pitched well the rest of the way, but the damage was done by the Cavs on Harrell. Harrell (L, 5-8) went just 2/3 of an inning, allowing four earned runs on six hits with a strikeout. Roark went the 6.1 innings, allowing no runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
Tech finally got on the board when Davis hit a solo home run to left-center field for her second career home run. In the fifth inning, an infield single by Smith plated pinch runner Ella Miller, but with the bases loaded, Kristin Graham flew out to center to end the threat. In the seventh inning, the Hokies loaded the bases with one out and Graham lifted a fly ball to score a run via a sacrifice fly, but with two out and runners on second and third base, Davis sliced a fly ball to left, but Taylor Williams made the catch while falling down to secure the win.
At the plate, Smith had three more hits to lead the way. Davis, Kristina Cruz and Kristen Froehlich each picked up a hit.
With the two wins, Virginia clinches the series against Tech for the first time since 2005.
Tech and UVa will play the third game of the series on Sunday at noon. The game has been moved up an hour due to the potential for rain in the area.
