BLACKSBURG - A day after putting up 19 runs in a doubleheader sweep, the Virginia Tech softball team continued to swing the hot sticks in sweeping Hampton University Wednesday afternoon at Tech Softball Park. The Hokies downed the Pirates 10-2 in six innings in the opener and then blanked them 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap.
In the first game, Tech wasted little time in busting it open, scoring four runs in the first inning. The big play came when Kelsey Hensel doubled off the wall to plate three runs after Kristin Graham hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. Unfortunately, later in the inning, Hensel suffered a hand injury diving back into the bag and will miss at least a week, adding to an already lengthy injury report.
Marra Hvozdovic scored on a wild pitch in the second inning, and then in the sixth inning, the Hokies scored five runs to end the game early. Hampton committed two errors on the same play to allow three runs to score. Bkaye Smith drove in a run with a fielder’s choice and Ashton Ward eventually drove her in with a single to end the game.
Tech had nine hits in the game, two coming from Alicia Field. Field filled in admirably for Hensel the rest of the day. Also picking up a hit was Smith, Richelle McGarva, Sarah Ashby, Ward, Graham, Hensel and Hvozdovic.
Graham had a solid day in the circle, going six innings to pick up her first win of the season. She allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with three walks and a career-high eight strikeouts.
In the second game, it took a little while for the Hokies to get going, but they eventually took care of business. Smith scored in the first inning on an error and that’s the way it stood until the third inning. Smith tripled to the gap to plate Ashby and then scored on a McGarva single. Stephanie Kujawa drove in two with a single and then Field drove in a run with a double to the gap to complete the rally.
Leading 6-0 in the fourth, Tech got two runs to effectively end the game. Hvozdovic tripled to plate Graham and then Kristina Cruz doubled to drive in Hvozdovic.
Ashton Ward (W, 2-0) went the distance to pick up her second win in as many days. She pitched five shutout innings, allowing four hits and three walks with eight strikeouts.
Kujawa led the way with a pair of hits while Smith, McGarva, Graham, Hvozdovic, Cruz, Field and Ashby each had one hit.
Tech, winners of six of its last eight, will host the University of Virginia this weekend in a big ACC series. The doubleheader will start Saturday at noon and a single game will be played Sunday at 1 o’clock. It’s also a celebration of 15 years of Tech softball as nearly 40 former players are expected to be back in town for Alumnae Weekend.
