BLACKSBURG - The weather was windy and chilly, but the Hokie bats were red hot as the Virginia Tech softball team opened its home schedule in resounding fashion, sweeping North Carolina A&T Tuesday afternoon at Tech Softball Park. The Hokies rolled in the first game 11-2 in five innings before putting away the Aggies 8-1 in the night cap.

In the first game, the Hokies fell behind 2-0 in the first inning, but came back with a seven-spot in their half of the inning. Bkaye Smith scored on Richelle McGarva’s single and then Kristin Graham hit her first home run of the season to make it 4-0. Kristina Cruz drove in a run with a double to the gap and then Stephanie Kujawa tripled in a run before Smith came back around to drive in her first collegiate run with an infield single.

McGarva scored in the second inning on a Kristen Froehlich single and in the third stanza, McGarva drove in two with a double to the gap to make it 10-2. Marra Hvozdovic gave the Hokies the run they needed to end the game early with her first home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth.

Ashton Ward (W, 1-0) picked up her first win in a Hokie uniform by going four innings. She allowed three runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Jasmin Harrell got the final three outs, recording a strikeout.

At the plate, Tech had 10 hits. Cruz, McGarva and Smith led the way with two apiece while Graham, Froehlich, Hvozdovic and Kujawa each had one.

The second game was a little tighter, but Tech was in control the entire way. Tech scored in the first inning when Graham drove in Ward with a single. In the second inning, Betty Rose scored on McGarva’s single and then Ward scored on another RBI single from Graham. Froehlich tripled to drive in Graham and then Froehlich scored on a single from Kelsey Hensel to make it 5-0.

Rose cranked her first collegiate home run in the fourth inning, a solo shot to left-center field and then in the sixth inning, Graham drove in another run with a single before Hvozdovic plated a run with a single to make it 8-1.

Kenzie Roark got the start, but went just two innings before experiencing pain in her elbow and being pulled. She allowed no runs on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Harrell (W, 7-5) went the final five innings, allowing a run on seven hits with four strikeouts.

At the plate, Tech pounded out 13 hits with Graham leading the way with three hits and three RBI. Rose had two hits and scored three runs while Smith and McGarva also had two hits. Ward, Froehlich, Hvozdovic and Hensel each had one hit.

For the day, McGarva, Graham and Smith had four hits apiece to lead the way for an offense that hit .469.

Tech will be back in action on Wednesday for a home doubleheader against Hampton starting at 3 o’clock. Admission is free.
