RALEIGH, N.C. - The Virginia Tech softball gave up four runs late in falling to NC State, 4-3, Sunday afternoon in the final game of a three-game series at Dail Stadium. Tech won the two games Saturday to take the series, though, and now stand at 2-1 in the ACC.

A duel between Tech’s Kenzie Roark and State’s Lindsay Campana was the story of most of the game as the two shut the other offense down for the early part of the game. But in the fourth inning, Kristina Cruz drew a walk and Sarah Ashby pinch ran for her, stealing second. Courtney Liddle eventually came up and after fouling off several pitches to run the count full, the freshman crushed the Campana offering for a two-run bomb to make it 2-0. It was the seventh home run of the season and second of the weekend for Liddle.

Down to its final six outs, the Wolfpack came alive to chase Roark from the game. Breanna Andrews had a double to the gap to plate a run to make it 2-1. After Jasmin Harrell was put in the game, she got an infield fly for the first out, but Toni Ann Williford’s sacrifice fly to deep center tied it up. State loaded the bases with two outs and then Lauren Peters put the ball in play as things got out of whack. On the play, Kelsey Hensel threw the ball home and Andrews made contact with Liddle at home, allowing a second run to come home on the error.

A 10-minute delay ensued as Tech coach Scot Thomas challenged the play. The umpires gathered twice and then pulled out the rule book after Thomas protested the play, cleared the NC State dugout so they could meet, and finally confirmed the ruling on the field to make it 4-2 in favor of the ‘Pack. Liddle injured her shoulder on the play and had to be removed from the game.

In the seventh, the Hokies got a run on a double from Kristin Graham, but left the tying and go-ahead run on the paths when Kristen Froehlich flew out to shallow center field to end the game.

Roark (L, 3-10) was the tough-luck loser. She pitched well for the first five innings before running into trouble. She went five-plus innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Harrell pitched an inning, giving up an unearned run while walking a batter.

The Hokies had seven hits in the game, two from Ashton Ward and Graham, and one apiece from Richelle McGarva, Liddle and Froehlich.

Tech will finally play a home game this week, hosting North Carolina A&T on Tuesday in a doubleheader starting at 3 o’clock and then against Hampton on Wednesday at 3 o’clock. All games are played at Tech Softball Park and admission is free.
