RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia Tech softball team opened ACC play in impressive fashion Saturday afternoon as it swept NC State 2-0 and 11-0 in five innings at Dail Stadium. After dropping their last five games, the Hokies broke out of a slump in a big way to start conference play 2-0.

In the opener, Tech wasted little time getting on the board when freshman Courtney Liddle blasted a solo home run to deep center field to make it a 1-0 lead. NC State ace Lindsay Campana settled down, as she sat down 11 straight Tech batters before sophomore Kristen Froehlich hit a solo home run down the left field line that barely snuck inside the foul pole for her first home run of the season.

Kenzie Roark (W, 3-9) was spectacular, outdueling Campana with a five-hit shutout. She struck out six and walked just two in picking up her first complete game shutout.

Tech had just three hits in the game, coming from Bkaye Smith, Liddle and Froehlich.

In the second game, the Hokies batted around in the second inning, scoring five runs. Froehlich singled to lead off the inning and moved up when Kristin Graham drew a walk. Froehlich scored on a close play at home when Kelsey Hensel singled to center field to make it 1-0. Graham scored when Richelle McGarva reached on an error and then Liddle singled to left to plate Hensel, but on the plate, the ball scampered through left fielder Landon Warren’s legs, allowing McGarva to score from first base and Liddle to reach third base. The next batter, Ashton Ward, tripled down the right field line to make it 5-0.

In the third inning, Froehlich walked and Graham singled to lead off the inning. Hensel then ripped a two-RBI double to the gap to make it 7-0. Pinch runner Marra Hvozdovic scored when McGarva flared a single down the right field line to give Tech an eight-run lead. An RBI single from Graham in the fourth inning plated Ward and Hensel plated Froehlich with a groundout. Kristina Cruz got her first hit since the second game of the season with a sharp double to the gap to plate Graham and make it 11-0 in the fourth inning.

Tech exploded with 10 hits. Hensel had a career-high four RBI to go along with two hits while Graham also had two hits. Also picking up hits were Smith, McGarva, Liddle, Ward, Froehlich and Cruz.

Jasmin Harrell (W, 6-5) went four innings, allowing no runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout. Ward pitched the final inning

The 11 runs are the most runs scored since scoring 14 against Western Carolina on Feb. 19 and the 11-run difference ties for the largest of the season.

The two teams will wrap up the series Sunday at 1 o’clock.
