COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Virginia Tech softball team wrapped up a tough weekend of play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic with a 2-0 loss to Nebraska Sunday afternoon. The loss caps off a 0-5 weekend and extends the Hokies’ losing streak to nine games, the third-longest in program history.

The Cornhuskers strung together a pair of hard hits to plate a run in the bottom of the first inning to jump out to a quick lead. Tech had a great chance to take the lead in the third inning, but some spectacular defense by the Huskers quashed the rally. Richelle McGarva doubled down the line to move Bkaye Smith to third and then Courtney Liddle ripped a shot, but third baseman Heidi Foland dived to her left and snatched the ball out of the air to save two runs.

That would be the best chance for the Tech squad as the Hokies went quietly the rest of the game. Nebraska tacked on an unearned run in the sixth to seal the win.

Kenzie Roark (L, 1-6) pitched much better than in previous outings, but was still the tough-luck loser as she got no offensive support. She pitched six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

At the plate, Tech had little go its way as just two hits were recorded, a double from Whitney Davis and a double McGarva.

Tech (4-10) will take the week off before heading on the road for a 10-day road trip that coincides with the school’s Spring Break. The Hokies will play in Clearwater, Fla., next weekend in the USF Under Armour Invitational and will then stay in Florida to play in Boca Raton at the FAU “Parent’s Weekend” Tournament.
