ATHENS, Ga. – The Virginia Tech softball squad had a rough go of it Saturday at the Red & Black Showcase, falling 2-0 to Winthrop before dropping an 8-0 decision to No. 8/6 Georgia in five innings later in the day at the UGa Softball Complex.

In the first contest, neither team was able to mount much of anything until the fourth inning when Winthrop used three first-pitch singles to plate the game’s first run. The Eagles tacked on an insurance run in the fifth inning with an RBI double off the wall

Freshman Jasmin Harrell (L, 3-1) went the distance, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts. For the first time this season, the Hokies’ bats went silent for a full game as they were shut out on a four-hitter. Bkaye Smith, Kristin Graham, Ashton Ward and Sarah Ashby had the lone hits while Winthrop hurler Cari Wooldridge struck out eight.

Later in the day, Georgia wasted little time in jumping out to a big lead with a five spot in the first inning. A pair of walks came back to haunt starter Kenzie Roark (L, 1-3) as they both scored on a blistering single by Brianna Hesson. After another single, Roark was pulled for Harrell, who promptly gave up a three-run home run to Kristyn Sandberg. Roark last just 1/3 of an inning, allowing four runs on two hits with a strikeout. Harrell went the final four innings, allowing four runs on six hits with a strikeout.

The Hokies failed to score for the second-straight game as Smith, Graham and Davis had the only hits. Tech had a golden chance in the fifth inning, putting runners on second and third with no one out, but a shallow fly ball from Richelle McGarva couldn’t plate anything. A controversial third strike call on Courtney Liddle followed and Graham just missed a home run, sending one deep to the warning track in center for the third out. Georgia ended it shortly after with a two-run home run from Hesson.

Tech (4-4) will wrap up the weekend’s action with a 9:30 a.m. game against Bowling Green, which is a half hour later than originally scheduled to try and let the field thaw out after the expected overnight frost.
