UGa Softball Complex - 509 Box Score

ATHENS, Ga. – The Hokie softball team put up a good fight for five innings, but fell to No. 8/6 Georgia, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the Red & Black Showcase at UGA Softball Complex. Earlier in the day, Virginia Tech rolled past Western Carolina 14-3 in five innings.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning without recording a hit. Taylor Schlopy walked, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alisa Goler. Whitney Davis tied it up with a deep double off the right field fall to plate Courtney Liddle in the top of the second inning. One play earlier, Misty Hall was thrown out at home on a relay play and injured her knee on the collision. She left the game and didn’t return. She’ll be re-evaluated at the hotel tonight with her status for the rest of the weekend to be determined.

Georgia took the lead back in the second when another leadoff walk came around to score on a sharp single up the middle. The Bulldogs had a chance to blow it open in the fifth inning, loading the bases, but Kenzie Roark worked out of the jam with masterful pitching to Ashley Razey, jamming her and inducing a harmless groundout to end the threat.

Tech had a chance of its own in the sixth inning when Richelle McGarva led off by getting hit by a pitch, but both Ashton Ward and Stephanie Kujawa – who was in Hall’s spot in the order – popped up their bunt attempt for outs and Kristin Graham grounded out to end the inning. The Bulldogs made the Hokies pay in the sixth to put the game away. Kristyn Sandberg reached on an error to start the inning and then Amberlie Saxton parked a 3-1 pitch deep over the right field fence to make it 4-1 and all but end things. The Bulldogs tacked on two more unearned runs late to put it out of reach.

Roark (L, 1-2) went 5.1 innings for Tech, allowing five runs (three earned) on just three hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Jasmin Harrell got the last two outs for the Hokies, giving up an unearned run with a strikeout. Georgia pitcher Erin Arevalo was equally as masterful, tossing a three-hitter with nine strikeouts.

At the plate, Liddle and Davis (two) were the only Hokies to pick up hits. Tech committed four errors while UGa (4-1) committed two.

Tech (4-2) will be back in action on Saturday, taking on Winthrop (0-2) at 10 a.m., and then Georgia once again, this time at 2:30 p.m.
