Tech falls to Tar Heels in series finale
Five additional games added to schedule

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Virginia Tech softball team fell to the No. 13 University of North Carolina Tar Heels 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Anderson Stadium as the Heels completed a three-game sweep of the Hokies.

The Tar Heels jumped out quickly, scoring two runs in the first inning. A leadoff infield single and then a Kristen Froehlich error on a sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position for Danielle Spaulding. She ripped the first pitch she saw to the gap to make it 2-0 before the Hokies could blink.

In the third inning, the Tar Heels loaded the bases with just one out, but a Web Gem by Froehlich lying out for a pop up to right field to rob Ally Blake of a hit thwarted the threat.

UNC scored an insurance run in the fourth inning on a single by Breanna Brown.

In the seventh inning, Jessica Everhart led off with a single and scored all the way from first base on a double by Beth Walker to the gap. But Spaulding took control from there and struck out the last three Hokie batters to end the game.

Froehlich had one of only three hits in the game for the Hokies as the freshman recorded her team-leading eighth double. Everhart singled in her last at bat of the weekend and Walker drove her in with the double. For the three-game series, the Hokies had just six hits total and were shut out two of the three times out. Jenna Rhodes went 0-for-3 to end her nine-game hitting streak.

In the circle, Kenzie Roark (L, 14-13) went the distance, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

The sweep marks the first against the Hokies in ACC play since the 2005 season when NC State took all three against the Hokies. Florida State also swept the Hokies earlier that year, marking the only two previous sweeps against Tech in ACC competition.

Head coach Scot Thomas also announced the addition of five games, including one home contest, to the schedule. Because the Hokies have been rained out seven times, he has added theses games to the slate. Tech will travel to Greensboro on Thursday, April 23 for a 2 o’clock doubleheader at North Carolina A&T. On Tuesday, April 28, the Hokies will host Appalachian State in a single game starting at 7 p.m. On Thursday, April 30, Tech will travel back to Greensboro to take on UNC Greensboro in a 5 o’clock doubleheader.

Tech will look to get back on track Tuesday as it hosts Longwood at Tech Softball Park. The Hokies and Lancers will play the first game of the doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
