April 18, 2009

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 13th-ranked University of North Carolina softball team cruised to a pair of wins over Virginia Tech Saturday on a sunny and glorious day at Anderson Stadium. The Tar Heels won the first game 8-0 in five innings and then took game two, 5-0.

In the opener, not much went right for the Hokies as the Tar Heels cruised to an 8-0, five-inning win. UNC jumped on Tech starter Kristin Graham (L, 1-2) for two runs in the first inning and never looked back. Danielle Spaulding added a two-run home run in the second inning and the Heels scored two more in the fourth and Spaulding ended it with a single in the fifth.

Spaulding was masterful, allowing just one hit while striking out nine. That hit came from Jenna Rhodes who reached on an infield single in the third inning.

Graham didn’t record an out, allowing two runs and two walks. Abbie Rexrode pitched 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

The Hokies played much better in the second half of the double dip, but still fell, 5-0. North Carolina picked up a run in the third inning on an RBI single by Whitney Allen to open things up.

The Hokies had a golden chance in the third inning with runners on first and third with just one out and the heart of the order up. But pinch runner Kelsey Hensel tried to score on a passed ball and was thrown out at home and Erin Ota popped up to end the inning.

UNC struck for three runs in the fifth (only one was earned), capped by an Ally Blake double to the gap, to put things away.

Kenzie Roark (L, 14-12) pitched six innings, allowing five runs (one earned) on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Rhodes picked up the lone hits for the second game in a row as Lisa Norris shut down the recently hot Hokie offense. Rhodes picked up a pair of infield singles, but never got past second base as she was stranded one time and was caught stealing another time.

The Hokies were absolutely stymied at the plate all day, picking up just three hits in 12 team at bats while being shut out twice. It marks the first time since joining the ACC for the 2005 season that Tech has been shut out in both games of a doubleheader.

Tech (7-7 ACC) and UNC (14-2 ACC) will conclude the series on Sunday with a single game starting at 1 o’clock.
