LYNCHBURG, Va. – Behind 14 runs and 26 hits on the day, the Virginia Tech softball team continued its recent winning ways Thursday, sweeping Liberty 10-3 and 4-3 at Liberty Softball Field.

In the first game, the Hokies fell behind 1-0 in the second inning, but came back with two runs of their own in the third inning. Jenna Rhodes scored on Jessica Everhart’s single up the middle and a bloop single to left by Beth Walker plated Charisse Mariconda.

In the sixth, Kristen Froehlich connected on her first-collegiate home run, a three-run shot to left field that made it 5-1. Walker led off with a single through the left side and then came around to third base on Kristin Graham’s double to the gap. After a failed suicide squeeze in which Froehlich fouled off the bunt, she atoned for the mistake and blasted a shot to deep left field.

Tech added two more runs on a single by Erin Ota that plated Amber Walker and Jenna Rhodes. Mariconda picked up Tech’s sixth hit in a row to move Ota to third base and Everhart drove Ota in with a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 8-1.

In the seventh inning, Graham picked up her second double of the game, and Froehlich promptly followed with her second home run of the game, a deep fly to left-center to make it 10-1.

At the plate, Ota led the way with three hits and two RBI. Froehlich chipped in two hits – both round trippers – with a career-high five RBI. Mariconda, Beth Walker, Graham each had two hits while Rhodes, Everhart and Amber Walker each had one hit to account for the 14 hits for the Hokies.

In the circle, Kenzie Roark (W, 13-11) went 5.0 innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Abbie Rexrode pitched the final two innings, allowing two runs on three hits with a walk.

In the second game, the Hokies struck for three runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. Graham singled to shallow center to drive in Everhart. With the bases loaded, Amber Walker reached on an error that allowed two runs to cross the plate.

After Liberty scored two runs in the fourth inning, the Hokies got yet another unearned to make it 4-2. Graham missed on a suicide squeeze, leaving Everhart out to dry. But the throw down was dropped and trickled into left field to allow Everhart to scamper home.

The Flames made it interesting in the seventh inning, scoring a run with two outs to make it a one-run game. With the winning run at the plate, Roark induced a groundout to allow the Hokies to pull a Houdini and escape Lynchburg with the sweep.

Graham led the way at the plate with two hits and an RBI. Amber Walker had the other RBI in the win as she picked up a hit. Rhodes had two hits, as did Everhart and Davis. Ota, Beth Walker and Froehlich each had one hit.

Roark (W, 14-11) picked up her second win of the day. She went the distance, allowing three runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts. On the day, she threw 192 pitches as the Hokies reached the .500 mark for the first time since Feb. 7 when the Hokies were 2-2.

The Hokies are now on a six-game winning streak, their longest of the season. In that stretch, they’ve scored 48 runs on 70 hits with a team batting average of .400. Roark is 6-0 in this stretch with a 1.68 ERA.

Tech (19-19, 7-5 ACC) will step back into ACC play this weekend for a three-set at No. 13 North Carolina (39-7, 12-2 ACC). The two will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 o’clock and a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
