CLEARWATER, Fla.- Freshman Marra Hvozdovic hit a walk-off homerun over the left field fence, giving the Virginia Tech softball squad a 1-0 victory over Western Michigan on Sunday morning at the USF Under Armour Invite in Clearwater, Fla. Tech is now 8-12 overall after going 3-2 at the invitational. Sophomore Kenzie Roark went the distance for Tech and fanned six batters in the process, while retiring nine straight Broncos from the second to the fifth inning.

Tech got its first hit of the contest in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Kristen Froehlich tallied a base-hit to right field after working the count to three-and-two. Senior Jenna Rhodes laid down a bunt to the left side, giving the Hokies runners on first and second with only one out. Unfortunately Tech was unable to capitalize on the opportunity, keeping the score locked, 0-0

In the top of the fifth inning, Western Michigan loaded the bases with just one out. Roark settled down and got two stellar plays from the hot corner. Senior Charisse Mariconda threw out a Bronco at the plate for the second out of the inning and took care of the final out on a ground ball to third base.

The Broncos were knocking on the door again in the sixth inning. With two outs and runners on first and third, Roark rebounded and gathered herself once again. The sophomore got Bronco senior Amanda McBride to ground out for the final out of the sixth inning to keep Western Michigan off the scoreboard.

Tech threatened in the bottom of the sixth. Mariconda reached on a fielders choice in the inning, stole second and claimed third base on a Broncos wild pitch, but did not score in the inning. The two teams headed into the seventh inning tied 0-0

In the bottom of the seventh inning with one out, Hvozdovic stepped to the plate. The freshman, who hit her first career homerun against Illinois-Chicago on Saturday evening, connected on a pitch and hit her second homerun in as many days, giving Tech a 1-0 win.

The Hokies will continue their road trip with a stop in Nashville, Tenn., where they will play a double-header against Lipscomb on Wednesday, March 11. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
