Tech No. 7 in latest Division I Learfield Directors' Cup standings

NACDA Release

BLACKSBURG – In the first set of winter Division I Learfield Directors’ Cup standings announced Thursday, Virginia Tech moved up to No. 7 in the nation behind strong winter performances from its indoor track and field, wrestling and women’s swimming and diving teams.

Tech is the second-highest ranked school hailing from the ACC, with NC State coming in at No. 6. The Hokies have racked up 430.50 points thus far, outdueling last year’s mark of 364.50 at the winter update.

Under the direction of director of track and field and cross country Dave Cianelli, the men’s team turned in a fourth-place showing at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, and the women finished 14th, their highest finish since 2010. The distance medley relay team on the men’s side brought home a gold medal, the 17th national championship in Tech’s storied history.

Last weekend at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, the Hokies finished eighth in the team standings with 47.5 points under first-year head coach Tony Robie. The finish marked the program’s sixth consecutive in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships. The Hokies had three All-Americans, including the program’s second ever national finalist in Jared Haught.

The women’s swimming and diving team placed 33rd at the NCAA meet. The 400 medley relay team set a new program record, recording a time of 3 minutes, 32.82 seconds, and head coach Ned Skinner saw five Hokies earn All-America honors. The men will compete this weekend in Minneapolis, and their performance will be included in the next standings update.

The next Division I winter standings will be released April 5.

The Learfield Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships. To review the updated scoring changes for the 2017-18 year, please click here.
