BLACKSBURG – The 2017 fall semester was an outstanding one for Virginia Tech’s student-athletes, as 331 out of the 573 student-athletes on sport rosters earned a 3.0 grade-point average during the semester. That number represents almost 60 percent of Tech’s student-athletes.
In all, 192 student-athletes made the Dean’s List. Those who make the Dean’s List finished with a 3.40 GPA or better. Twenty-nine student-athletes earned a 4.0 GPA this past fall.
“Our fall was an incredibly strong academic semester,” said Matt Mayotte, director of Tech’s Student-Athlete Academic Support Services. “We are extremely pleased with the commitment to academics shown by our student-athletes, and we look forward to them continuing their hard work this spring.”
As one might expect, Tech’s individual sports performed strongly in the classroom as well. Seventeen of the 22 teams achieved a 3.0 GPA following the fall semester.
Overall, Tech’s student-athletes are continuing their gains built in previous semesters. In all, 329 student-athletes maintain a 3.0 GPA or better, including eight who maintain a perfect 4.0. The average cumulative GPA for a Tech student-athlete is 3.028.
From a team perspective, 17 of the Hokies’ 22 teams maintain cumulative grade-point averages of 3.0 or better.
In addition, several of Tech’s student-athletes and teams received recognition for their academic excellence this past fall semester. The ACC named 19 Tech student-athletes to the All-Academic Team in six different sports, including men’s cross country (6), women’s cross country (5), football (3), women’s soccer (2), volleyball (2) and men’s soccer (1).
Also, the Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams earned Scholar All-America Team honors by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). The women’s team recorded a 3.27 GPA this past fall, while the men’s team had a 3.02. The honors go to teams that achieve a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
