BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech recently named Matthew Mayotte director of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS). Mayotte began his role at Tech on August 4.
Mayotte will lead the SAASS office, which seeks to enhance the educational experience of student-athletes at Virginia Tech. In order to help students balance their academic and athletic demands, SAASS provides comprehensive academic support services such as tutoring, studying assistance, computing technology, structured study halls, and academic and individual skill developing programs.
“We are excited to bring an individual like Matt – who has a depth of experience in a similar office – to our university,” said Karen Eley Sanders, associate vice provost for undergraduate academic affairs and director of student success. “Matt shows a passion for helping student-athletes balance their college experience, so they can be successful in the classroom, in their athletic endeavors, and in their personal lives.”
Each year, SAASS serves more than 500 student-athletes who now comprise 22 athletic programs at Tech. In addition to those students on athletics teams, the office also supports student trainers and spirit squad members.
SAASS offices are located in Lane Stadium – a convenient spot for Hokie student-athletics – as most of the other athletic services like training facilities, locker rooms and coaches’ offices are close by in the Jamerson Athletic Center, Cassell Coliseum or the Merryman Center. The provost office and athletics department both contribute to the office.
“Matthew Mayotte brings a strong skill set to a critical leadership position as director of the Student-Athlete Support Services unit,” Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock said. “Academics and athletics have good reason to share a collective excitement about the positive strides we will continue to experience under his direction.”
Mayotte previously served as director of Student-Athlete Services at Troy University in Alabama for more than nine years, providing leadership for the academic progress for more than 430 student-athletes.
"My commitment to the student-athlete and the responsibility for education has always taken priority in my efforts as an administrator,” Mayotte said. “My precedence continues to be the well-being and personal development of the student-athlete as an individual. The skills I strive to impart provide a model for living well today, and in all future endeavors."
He earned both a bachelor’s degree in sport and fitness management and a master’s degree in athletic administration from Troy University.
