No. 40 Tech rolls past VCU 6-1

BLACKSBURG – The 40th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team rolled past VCU 6-1 in a non-conference match on Sunday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Tech (15-6) got out to the early lead after winning the doubles point. Abraham Asaba and Jason Kros paired up at three to win it 6-4. The Hokies’ 52nd-ranked Henrik Korsgaard and Alex Ribeiro clinched it on court one with a 6-3 win over Vitor Lima and Javier Amantegui.

Ribeiro pushed the Hokies to a 2-0 lead after he defeated Amantegui 6-0, 6-3 on court three. On court two, Kros knocked off Lima 6-2, 6-3 to give Tech a 3-0 lead in the match.

VCU (13-9) won the match on court four, but the Hokies’ 42nd-ranked Mitch Harper clinched the win for Tech on court one where he defeated Arvid Noren 6-3 in the first set. In the second set, Harper was down a break before coming back to win it 7-6(3).

Carlo Donato pushed the Tech lead to 5-1 with a 6-2, 7-6(5) win over Inigo Torre Martin at the five. The Hokies picked up the final point on court six where Freddy Mesmer won the first set 6-3 over Ignacio Rivero Crespo. The Rams’ player came back to take the second set 6-4, but Mesmer secured it in the super tiebreak 10-4.

The Hokies will wrap up the regular season next weekend, hosting No. 39 Louisville at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 20. Tech will host in-state rival Virginia in the finale on Sunday, April 22 at 1 p.m.
