BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team picked up a pair of wins on Sunday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center, defeating both Gardner-Webb and Davison with scores of 6-1.

The Hokies (9-1) opened the day, winning the doubles point against Gardner-Web as Freddy Mesmer and Jason Kros paired up for the 6-4 win on court three. Mitch Harper and Carlo Donato clinched the point, winning 6-4 in the two.

Tech took a 2-0 lead after Alex Ribeiro rolled on court three, defeating Paul Hogan 6-0, 6-4. Freddy Mesmer pushed the Hokies in front 3-0 with the 7-5, 6-4 decision over Breno Plentz in the five.

Donato secured the team win as he downed Adam Schmidt on court four with straight set scores of 6-1, 7-5.

George Cartledge and Harper rounded out the scoring for Tech. Cartledge downed Johan Fors 6-4, 6-4 at six while No. 29 Harper had the 6-3 7-6(3) win on one over Maximilian Scholl.

In the second match of the day, the Hokies again took the doubles point early with Mesmer and Kros pairing up to win 6-3 on court three. Harper and Donato clinched the point on court one, winning 6-4.

Kros, ranked 117th, pushed the Hokies to a 2-0 lead as he downed Shamael Chaudhry 6-3, 6-1. Donato took the match on court four, as he rolled past Axel Fries 6-3, 6-2.

Ribeiro clinched the team win in exciting fashion. After winning the first set 6-1 against Thomas Mason, Ribeiro trailed 5-0 in 2nd set before winning seven straight to secure the set 7-5.

Mesmer won on six, holding off Jack Riazzi. Mesmer won the first set 6-3, but faltered 5-7 in the second before holding on in the super tiebreak 10-8.

Henrik Korsgaard rallied to win on court five after dropping the first set 2-6 to David Hager. Korsgaard responded to win the next two 6-3, 6-3.

The Hokies will open the ACC slate next weekend, traveling to North Carolina to face the Tar Heels on Friday, March 2 at 2:30 p.m. Tech will remain in the Triangle to face Duke in a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, March 4.
