Men's tennis hosts final non-conference doubleheader before opening ACC slate

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is set for its final non-conference doubleheader of the season as the Hokies host Gardner-Webb and Davidson on Sunday, Feb. 25 beginning at 12:30 p.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

THE HOKIES (7-1, 0-0 ACC)
Virginia Tech rolled past St. Bonaventure and Richmond the last time out. Tech downed the Bonnies 7-0 before defeating the Spiders 6-1. Against SBU, the Hokies claimed all six singles matches in straight sets with No. 117 Jason Kros’ win at one securing the team win. In the Richmond match, the Hokies won the doubles point and took a 3-0 lead off wins from Carlo Donato and No. 29 Mitch Harper. Richmond got on the board, but Kros secured his second team win of the day as he won on court two. Henrik Korsgaard and Alex Ribeiro rounded out the scoring for the Hokies.

Entering the weekend, Korsgaard and Harper are ranked 20th in the latest ITA standings to go with Harper’s 29th and Kros’ 117th singles rankings. Harper is 4-0 in the spring while Kros is adding a 6-0 mark.

THE RUNNIN’ BULLDOGS (5-6, 0-0 Big South)
Gardner-Webb defeated Limestone 6-1 the last time out. The Runnin’ Bulldogs rolled to the doubles point, but Limestone put up a fight in the singles matches with three going to a third set. GWU got the win as Paul Hogan, Breno Plentz and Johan Fors claimed their matches in straight sets. Stefano Puga and Millen Hurrion battled but ultimately claimed the points for Gardner-Webb.

THE WILDCATS (5-3, 0-0 A-10)
Davidson had the 6-0 win over NC Central in the team’s last outing. The Wildcats rolled to the doubles point, winning the two matches 6-1. Davidson kept it going in singles, as they took all five played matches (NCCU did not field a player at six) in straight sets. Artem Khrapko, Shamael Chaudhry, Thomas Mason, Alex Fries and David Hager secured the points for the shutout.

UP NEXT: The Hokies open the ACC slate on Friday, March 2 at North Carolina before making the cross-Triangle trip to face Duke on Sunday, March 4 at 1 p.m.
