Hokies win two, defeat St. Bonaventure and Richmond

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team claimed two wins on Saturday, shutting out St. Bonaventure 7-0 before downing Richmond 6-1 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Tech (7-1) opened the day winning all three doubles matches. Jason Kros and Freddy Mesmer paired up to win 6-0 over Darrell Harxhi and Indra Patwardhan on court two. The Hokies secured the point as Henrik Korsgaard and Alexander Ribeiro paired up at one for a 6-2 win over Hector Martinez and Ante Zovko.

The Hokies continued putting up points as Ribeiro downed Zovko 6-1, 6-3 on two. Chase Bernstine pushed Tech to a 3-0 lead, defeating Guillermo Garcia 6-1, 6-3 at the three.

Jason Kros, ranked 123rd, clinched the team win as he won it 6-3, 6-0 over Martinez on court one. Carlo Donato, George Cartledge and Feliksas Sakalauskas completed the sweep for the Hokies, winning at three, five and six, respectively.

In the second match, the Hokies again got out to the lead, winning the doubles point with Donato and Mitch Harper 6-2 over James Aronson and Caleb Troy on court one. Kros and Mesmer secured the point downing Klein Evans and John Karlawish 6-2 at the three.

Donato pushed the Hokies lead to 2-0 with a decisive 6-2, 6-4 win over Evans on court four. Harper, ranked 23rd, gave Tech a 3-0 lead, defeating Troy 6-3, 6-3 at the one.

The Spiders (4-4) got on the board with a win at six, but the Hokies answered as Kros recorded his second match-clinching win of the day. He took the first set 6-4, but Kros faltered 3-6 in the second, but came back strong to win the third 6-1.

Korsgaard battled at the five, defeating Joe Nardini 6-3 in the opening set, but fell 4-6 in the second. He rallied to take the third 6-3, giving Tech a 5-1 lead. Ribero rounded out the wins for the Hokies as he won a hard-fought three-set match on court three, defeating Aronson 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4.

The Hokies will be back on the court Sunday, Feb. 25, hosting a doubleheader beginning with Davidson at 10 a.m. followed by Gardner-Webb at 3 p.m.
