Hokies host Eastern Kentucky and James Madison

Tech set for Friday doubleheader

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team returns home to host a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. against Eastern Kentucky followed by a 7 p.m. match versus James Madison at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

After hosting the nation's first Playsight Playfair collegiate match last season, the Hokies will again be using their Playsight technology for challenges this weekend. It will allow every player using a Playsight SmartCourt to challenge and review close line calls. By utilizing PlaySight’s multiple camera angles, players can cut down on cheating and gain more confidence with line calls, knowing that the video is there to back them up. The Hokies' Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center features six indoor courts that have Playsight technology.

The student-athletes will be allowed two challenges per set. If they win the challenge, the player keeps it, but if they incorrectly challenge it is lost for the remainder of the set. Challenges will be allowed for out-of-bounds calls.

THE HOKIES (3-1, 0-0 ACC)
Virginia Tech is coming off a 4-1 win over Penn State the last time out. The Hokies gave up the doubles point, but came back strong in singles. No. 68 Mitch Harper, No. 80 Jason Kros, No. 97 Alexandre Ribeiro and Henrik Korsgaard all claimed their singles matches to secure the win for the Hokies. In addition to the Hokies’ singles rankings, Harper and Korsgaard are 14th in the ITA doubles standings.

THE COLONELS (2-3, 0-0 OVC)
Eastern Kentucky defeated Northern Kentucky and University of Cumberlands last weekend to open the season. Nic Castaldo, Parth Aggarwal and Ramon van Flymen led the Colonels, going undefeated in both matches. Flymen leads EKU overall with an 11-7 record including fall competition.

THE DUKES (1-0, 0-0 CAA)
James Madison has just one match on the season, defeating Saint Francis 6-1 to open the season. The Dukes claimed all the matches except the number one singles. Pierre Kohler has a 7-3 record overall while Alvaro Arce Garcia is 7-7.

UP NEXT: The Hokies remain at home for another doubleheader, hosting St. Bonaventure and Davidson on Saturday, Feb. 10.
