Tech wraps up Longhorn Invitational, No. 68 Harper downs No. 50

AUSTIN, Texas – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team wrapped up competition at the Longhorn Invitational as No. 68 Mitch Harper picked up his third ranked singles win of the weekend, defeating No. 50 on Sunday afternoon in Austin, Texas.

Harper battled against Vanderbilt’s No. 50 Daniel Valent, winning the first set 7-5 before falling 2-6 in the second. Harper rallied in the third to secure the match 6-3.

Tech’s No. 80 Jason Kros secured a win over host team Texas’ Christian Sigsgaard. Kros gave up the opening set 5-7, but came back strong to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-4.

Carlo Donato defeated Vanderbilt’s Baker Newman in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 while teammate George Cartledge won the first set against Johnny Goodwin 6-1 and secured the match after the Texas player retired.

Freshman Chase Bernstine took Vanderbilt’s Tate Allwardt to three, rallying to win the match after falling 2-6 in the opening set. Bernstine took the next two sets 6-4, 6-1.

In doubles Harper paired up with Alexandre Ribeiro for a big win over the ITA’s 27th-ranked tandem of Yuya Ito and Harrison Scott. The Hokies team held off the Texas duo to win it in a tiebreak 8-7(9).

The Hokies will be back on the court next weekend for the first dual matches of the spring, hosting Liberty and North Carolina A&T on Friday, Jan. 19. Tech will take on the Flames at 11 a.m. followed by the Aggies at 3 p.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
