Harper defeats No. 37 on day one of Longhorn Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas – Virginia Tech men’s tennis junior Mitch Harper, ranked 68th, led the Hokies with a win over ITA’s No. 37 on Friday during the opening day of the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas.

Harper downed the host team’s No. 37 Leonardo Telles with straight set scores of 6-0, 6-3 to lead the Hokies. Abraham Asaba also picked up a win for Tech as he defeated Vanderbilt’s Adam Sraberg 6-3, 6-4. George Cartledge claimed the 6-2, 6-4 win over Vandy’s Vikram Chari.

Several Hokies battled to three sets in their respective matches. Chase Bernstine took Texas’ Adrian Ortiz to three. After giving up the first set 2-6, Bernstine came back to win the second 6-1 before falling 4-6 to Ortiz. Alexandre Ribeiro claimed his opening set 7-5, but Vanderbilt’s Baker Newman rallied to win the next two 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles, Cartledge paired up with Feliksas Sakalauskas for an 8-3 win over Vandy’s Sraberg and Alex Ross.

The Hokies will be back on the court Saturday at 11 a.m ET in Austin, Texas.
