Hokies open spring at Longhorn Invitational

Men's tennis set for a three-day event against No. 8 Texas and Vanderbilt

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is set to open its spring slate this weekend at the Longhorn Invitational Jan. 12-14 at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.

Representing the Hokies this weekend are Abraham Asaba, Chase Bernstine, George Cartledge, Carlo Donato, Mitch Harper, Henrik Korsgaard, Jason Kros, Ryan Kros, Alexandre Ribeiro and Feliksas Sakalauskas.

Harper finished the fall ranked 68th after representing the Hokies at the ITA Fall National Championships. Ribeiro also competed at the event and ended fall play ranked 97th. Jason Kros enters the spring ranked 80th, entering the standings for the first time in his career after posting a 9-5 record. Harper is ranked 14th in doubles with teammate Korsgaard after the pair earned an at-large bid to the ITA Nationals.

Texas is ranked eighth in the preseason ITA top-25 to lead the Big 12 Conference. Harrison Scott wrapped up the fall ranked 27th while Leonardo Telles enters the spring at 37th. John Mee is 52nd and Rodrigo Banzer comes in at 98th. Banzer and Telles are fifth in doubles while Scott is matched up with Yuya Ito at 23rd in doubles.

Daniel Valent is ranked for Vanderbilt at 50th. The Commodores also have a doubles team in the rankings with Lachlan McPhee and Billy Rowe at 36th.

This event will be formatted as follows:
• Only individual results will be recorded (no team results)
• There will be one individual champion. The champion will be the player who earns the most points during the weekend. Players will be awarded points for each singles and each doubles win based on lineup position of opponent. In singles, a win over position #1 is worth 11 points, and a win over position #11 is worth one point. In doubles, a win over position #1 is worth five points, and a win over positon #5 is worth one point.
• Each player will play one singles and one doubles match each day (although Texas and Vanderbilt will have to leave one player out of doubles each day).
• All singles matches are best two of three sets; All doubles matches are 8 game pro-sets with breakers at 7-7

Competition is slated to begin at 11 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday. All times listed as ET.
