Hokies advance in singles and doubles at ITA Atlantic Region Championships

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team got off to a strong start on Friday during the first day of main draw competition at the 2017 ITA Atlantic Region Championships in Lynchburg, Virginia.
The Hokies opened the day winning all four doubles matches. Chase Bernstine and George Cartledge paired up to down Hampton’s Peter Odegbami and Fedor Shirin 8-6 while Abraham Asaba and Jason Kros knocked off Radford’s Alexandros Caldwell and Rodrigo Magalhaes 8-6.
Ryan Kros paired up with Feliksas Sakalauskas, defeating Duquesne’s Drew Akins and Andrew Ong 8-4. Carlo Donato and Alex Ribeiro downed Delaware’s Justice Jones and Laurenz Lankes 8-3.
In singles, Cartledge defeated Delaware’s Jones 7-5, 6-2 to advance into the next round of singles. Sakalauskas also picked up a win to advance, powering past Temple’s Uladzimir Dorash in a three-set battle, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
Ribeiro, Jason Kros and Donato had first round byes in the singles draw.
Tech will return to the court on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. with two rounds of doubles followed by a round of singles.
