Tech falls to No. 32 Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team was edged 4-2 by No. 32 Florida State after five of the six singles matches went to three sets on Friday evening at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.

The Hokies (10-12, 4-7 ACC) fell behind early after giving up the doubles point. Tech won the match on one where No. 49 Jai Corbett and Henrik Korsgaard paired up to defeat Lucas Poullain and Jose Gracia, 6-3. FSU won the match on three, but the Hokies duo of Mitch Harper and Alexandre Ribeiro forced the tiebreak on two for the deciding point. The Seminoles pair of Terrell and Terrance Whitehurst outlasted the Tech tandem for the 7-6(4) win to secure the point.

Florida State(16-9, 6-5 ACC) pushed its lead to 3-0 with wins on courts one and two before the Hokies got on the board. Korsgaard fell 6-3 to Gracia in the opening set on three before battling back to win the next two 6-4, 6-3.

Ribeiro closed the gap to 3-2 after a win on four where he also gave up the opening set 6-3. The Tech player answered against Rana Roop Bhullar to win the second set 6-3 and the third, 6-2.

The Seminoles secured the team win at six where Terrance Whitehurst had a 6-4 first set win over the Hokies’ Jason Kros who rallied to win the second 6-3. Whitehurst powered back in the third to win it 6-4 and secure the match for the Seminoles.

On five, the match went unfinished but Tech’s Freddy Mesmer was up on Alex Knaff, 4-6, 7-6(4), 5-3.

Tech will wrap up the regular-season on Sunday, April 23 at Miami in a noon match.
