BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team was tied with No. 18 Georgia Tech 3-3 before Jason Kros claimed a win in three sets to give the Hokies the 4-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
The Hokies (10-11, 4-6 ACC) got the day off to strong start, picking up the doubles point to go up 1-0. Kros paired up with Freddy Mesmer on court three to defeat Carlos Divar and Michael Kay 7-5. Georgia Tech won on one 7-5 so the deciding match came down to two where Mitch Harper and Alexandre Ribeiro went into a tiebreak against Cole Fiegel and Daniel Yun before winning it 7-6(4).
The Yellow Jackets (15-5, 7-3 ACC) tied it up in singles with a win at five, but Harper took the match on two 6-1, 6-4 over Carlos Benito to put the Hokies back on top 2-1.
Georgia Tech again knotted it, taking the match at one. The Hokies reclaimed the lead after Henrik Korsgaard battled past Fiegel at four. After dropping the first set 6-1, Korsgaard came back strong, winning the next two 6-3, 6-2.
True to the play of the day, the Yellow Jackets again tied it up following a win at three, bringing the deciding match down to court six with Kros and Chris Yun. Kros gave up the opening set 6-1, but rallied for a back-and-forth second that had the two tied at 5-5 before the Hokies’ player won two games to win it 7-5.
In the third set, Kros was up 2-0 before lightning in the area forced the match indoors. Once play resumed, Yun answered, tying it up at 3-3. The two traded points with Yun serving on top 5-4, but Kros broke to even the score. The Hokies’ sophomore again won two straight to secure the set 7-5, claiming the match and propelling Virginia Tech to the win.
The Hokies will wrap up the regular season next weekend with a trip through Florida. Virginia Tech will face Florida State on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Miami on Sunday at noon.
