Virginia Tech travels to UVA, VCU for weekend matches

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team takes to the road for a pair of matches this weekend. Tech will face in-state ACC rival No. 4 Virginia on Friday, April 7 at 3 p.m. The Hokies will remain on the road for a 1 p.m. match at VCU on Sunday, April 9.

THE HOKIES (8-10, 3-5 ACC)
Virginia Tech split last weekend, defeating Clemson 6-1 at home before falling to Louisville 5-2 on the road. Tech claimed the doubles point against the Cardinals and had a big win at the one where Jai Corbett and Henrik Korsgaard knocked off 22nd-ranked Sean Donohue and Parker Wynn. The Hokies other point came from Freddy Mesmer at the six singles.

Corbett and Korsgaard entered this week’s doubles rankings at 46th after the win over the Cardinals’ duo. Mesmer improved to 11-1 this spring. Mitch Harper has an 11-7 tally in duals while Jason Kros is 10-7.

THE CAVALIERS (18-1, 4-1 ACC)
Virginia also split last weekend, falling to top-ranked Wake Forest 5-2 before defeating Clemson 7-0. The Hoos picked up points against the Deacs with two wins in singles as Henrik Wiersholm and Luca Corinteli took the matches on courts five and six, respectively.

Thai-Son Kwiatkowski leads the Hoos with a ranking of 12th in the latest ITA standings and is 14-2 in duals. Collin Altamirano is 63rd and 8-5 while Wiersholm is 79th with a 12-0 mark. Alexander Ritschard has posted a 15-2 tally and J.C. Aragone is 14-3. Kwiatkowski and Ritschard have also paired up in doubles for a 12-0 record.

Friday's match is part of the Commonwealth Clash presented by Virginia529, a head-to-head, points-based competition between the athletic teams at University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. The Commonwealth Clash encourages a friendly, statewide rivalry between the two schools across all school-sponsored sports with 22 individual event points on the line. THE RAMS (10-9)
VCU fell to UNC Wilmington 4-1 the last time out. Inaki Rivero Crespo picked up the lone point for the Rams with a win at five.

Arvid Noren has the best record for the Rams this spring at 12-3. Daryl Monfils is 7-6 at the one while Marten Jonsson is 8-6 with a 6-5 tally at two. Javier Amantegui is 8-7 with time spent at three through six.
