Tech wins doubles, five singles matches

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team picked up another ACC win on Sunday afternoon, defeating Boston College 6-1 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

The Hokies opened the day strong, winning the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Jai Corbett and Henrik Korsgaard paired up for the 6-3 win on one, defeating Derek Austin and Hank Workman. Tech clinched the point with a 6-2 victory on two where Mitch Harper and Alexandre Ribeiro took the match from Conor and Sean Mullins.

Tech pulled ahead 3-0 with a pair of wins. First, Ribeiro downed Workman on three, 6-3, 6-0. Korsgaard followed up with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Sean Mullins at four.

The Hokies clinched the match on two where Harper downed Aidan McNulty. Harper pulled out to a 3-1 lead in the opening set, but McNulty came back to tie it up and the two were knotted at 6-6. The Tech player secured the set in the tiebreak, 7-4 before winning the second set 6-4.

Boston College won on six to get on the board, but the Hokies closed out the match with wins on five and one. Jason Kros and Corbett both rallied to win their respective matches. Kros fell in the opening set on five 6-2 to Kent Mukai before coming back to win the next two 6-4, 6-3.

On one, Corbett faltered in the first 6-2 against Austin and was down 3-1 in the second before winning the next two points to tie it up at 3-3. The two traded points and were even at 5-5 before Corbett again won two straight games to take it 7-5. He handled the third set for a 6-3 win.

The Hokies will be back on the court Friday, March 31 when they host Clemson in a noon match at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
