WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team fell to the nation’s top-ranked Wake Forest 7-0 on Tuesday afternoon at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
Tech (6-8, 1-3 ACC) gave up the match on court one in doubles where Jai Corbett and Henrik Korsgaard fell to the ITA’s No. 1 pair of Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim 6-4.
The Hokies did take the match on three as Jason Kros and Freddy Mesmer paired up for a 7-5 decision over Petros Chrysochos and Dennis Uspensky. The deciding match came down to two where Mitch Harper and Alexandre Ribeiro were tied at 5-5 with Alan Gadjiev and Borna Gojo before the Deacs’ pair notched the next two to win it 7-5, giving Wake a 1-0 lead.
Wake Forest (15-1, 3-0 ACC) won the first two singles matches in straight sets on courts four and five. On six, Kros gave up the first set 6-3, but pushed Gadjiev to a tiebreak in the second who held on to win it 7-6(5), securing the team win for Wake.
Harper took No. 57 Gojo to a tiebreak in the opening set on three, 7-6(3), but the Wake player came back to win the second 6-3.
Ribeiro gave 14th-ranked Mansouri all he could handle on two as the pair went to tiebreaks in two sets. The Wake player outlasted Ribeiro in the first set 7-6(5) and secured the win 7-6(3) in the second.
The final point came down to court one where Tech’s 82nd-ranked Corbett battled No. 2 Chrysochos to three. Corbett won the opening set 7-5, but Chrysochos rallied for the second 6-4. The final was a super tiebreak in which Chrysochos held on to take it 10-7.
Virginia Tech will be back on the court Friday, March 24 hosting 38th-ranked Notre Dame at 3 p.m.
